Newark, NJ — An industrial accident at a Newark port killed a woman, who was unloading a container ship Wednesday, February 22, 2012. The workplace accident occurred at the Port Newark Container Terminal in the Newark Bay at about 7:15 p.m., reported NJ.com.
The 47-year-old female dockworker was reportedly caught between two of the railroad-car-sized metal containers that were removed from a ship.
Responding emergency crews rushed the woman by ambulance to University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. At 8:34 p.m., the woman was pronounced dead.
The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time, but she was a member of the International Longshoreman’s Association.
An investigation into the work-related accident is underway. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are also expected to investigate.
The container terminal is privately operated.
