Chicago, IL — Police are investigating how a teen got into a Gold Coast high-rise trash chute Monday night, February 20, 2012, where he fell 46 stories to his death. The fatal accident occurred around 11 p.m. inside the high-rise where he lived near the corner of Astor and North, reported ABC7 Chicago.
Police found 17-year-old Charles Manley, who suffered from Down syndrome, at the bottom of the trash cute in the trash compactor on the ground floor after falling from the 46th floor.
Manley’s parents reportedly woke up after a bell and an alarm system above the family’s door started ringing, alerting them that Charles had left the apartment. They saw Charles was gone and alerted 911.
The medical examiner ruled that Manley sustained multiple injuries from the fall, which led to his death.
It is unknown how Manny exactly got into the trash chute.
Residents of the building revealed that the chutes are 4 feet off the ground, with about a 1 ½-feet square with a door covering the opening.
Investigations are underway.
