New York, NY—One person was killed and two others were injured in a freak elevator accident in a midtown Manhattan building Wednesday, December 14, 2011. The elevator accident occurred at an office building located at 285 Madison Avenue, near East 40th Street, reported MSNBC.
According to reports, a woman was stepping on an elevator when it began to rise. As the woman was halfway onto the elevator it suddenly shot up, without closing its doors first. The woman was subsequently crushed between the elevator and the shaft wall.
The two injured people were already inside the elevator when the accident occurred. The injuries the two victims sustained are reportedly considered to be minor.
The identities of those involved are being withheld at this time.
It is unknown at this time of what caused the elevator malfunction. Investigations are underway.
