Macon, GA — A three-month-old infant died Tuesday, September 20, 2011, after falling from a grocery shopping cart. This tragic accident is now highlighting the dangers of putting a baby carrier on top of an elevated surface—like a shopping cart.
According to information provided by Macon News, the infant was secured in his carrier, but was not secured to the seat in the cart, when the shopping cart hit a speed bump while in the Kroger parking lot on Forsyth Road. This subsequently caused the carrier to fall over.
The child’s mother was reportedly pushing the cart, with the carrier on top, while they were leaving the store, just before 11 a.m.
The infant was rushed to Coliseum Northside Hospital and later transferred to The Medical Center of Central Georgia, where the baby was pronounced dead in the pediatric intensive care unit at around 4:03 p.m.
Dr. Jason Smith of Primary Pediatrics told Macon News that they see at least 10 accidents as a result of shopping carts every year.
“We also see a lot of accidents like this that happen where car seats fall from an elevated spot, whether it be a counter top or something else,” says Dr. Jones to Macon News, “And just, you know, a reminder to definitely make sure that we’re not putting it at a high spot and that includes a shopping cart.”
Kroger’s Atlanta division issued this statement in regards to the death: “Our deepest sympathy and most sincere, heartfelt thoughts go to the family during this time, and Kroger is fully cooperating with the local investigation.”
