Rochester, NY — A construction accident in the Genesee River Gorge has left a man who was pinned under a fallen crane dead. The fatal construction accident occurred Tuesday afternoon, September 6, 2011, at 2:45 p.m., at a project for Rochester Gas and Electric, reported WXXI.
According to officials, a crane tipped over as the worker was moving the crane from one side of the sloped concrete spillway to another, causing the man to become trapped under the heavy machinery.
Responding rescue crews worked frantically for hours to free the construction worker, who remains unidentified, but their efforts did not prove successful. The man was reportedly conscious and talking to the rescue crews, but he died as they began lifting the crane off of him shortly after 6 p.m.
It is unknown what exactly led to his death.
The construction worker was reportedly employed by a Michigan construction company who was hired to work on the hydroelectric facility in the gorge.
The U.S. Occupational Safety Administration (OSHA) and the state Department of Labor are expected to arrive at the construction site to conduct a full investigation into the fatal construction accident.
