Charleston, WV — A carnival ride operator was injured at the State Fair of West Virginia, when he was hit in the face by one of the ride’s arms. The work-related accident occurred on Saturday, August 20, 2011 around 10:45 p.m., as reported by the Register-Herald.

According to officials, Adolfo Dominguez, 25, of Mexico, was operating a ride called “Speed” when he was suddenly hit in the face by one of the ride’s “arms” or gondolas.

Responding emergency crews airlifted Dominguez to Charleston Area Medical Center, where he underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. He reportedly sustained a fractured nose and several facial lacerations and remains in critical condition.

Officials say it is unclear what caused Dominguez to walk into the ride’s path while it was in motion.

No one else was injured in the carnival ride accident. Authorities say the accident was caused by operator error. The ride has since been disassembled.
