Wildwood, NJ — Five people were injured on an amusement ride at Morey’s Mariner’s Landing Pier in Wildwood on Friday, August 19, 2011. The Sea Dragon ride broke at 9:15 p.m., when the mast snapped off, reported the Philadelphia Inquirer.
According to officials, the mast of the pendulum-like pirate ship, which swings riders in a 180 degree-arc, suddenly snapped off while the ride was in operation.
The falling steel hit a 13-year-old rider, who was then rushed to Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May Court House.
Four other victims received medical treatment at the scene by responding EMTs.
The 29-year-old ride is closed while investigations are ongoing. The state Carnival and Amusement Ride Safety Bureau investigators are looking into the Sea Dragon accident.
Just two months ago, another amusement park attendee was killed after falling from a 160-foot-high Ferris wheel at Mariner’s landing. According to state investigators, the ride had no mechanical defects, and they believe the 11-year-old girl fell after she stood or kneeled on her seat and leaned out of the gondola that she was riding in.
