Salida, CO — Seven people were rushed to the hospital after being involved in a bus accident in southern Colorado. The bus accident occurred as the bus was headed to the Arkansas River for a rafting trip at about 4:45 p.m., Thursday, July 21, 2011, reported the Colorado Springs Gazette.
According to police officers, the 1991 Blue Bird bus owned by Vessels for Honor Rafting Co. overturned on Colorado 50, near the Parkdale Recreation Site. The bus, which was transporting 38 people, was pulling a trailer with rafts on it at the time.
The bus reportedly ran off the left side of the road and overturned onto its roof, as the bus slid down a steep embankment.
Raft guides and other adult passengers aboard the bus helped other passengers escape the wreckage by using the rear emergency exit.
Responding emergency crews transported six people by ambulance to Canon City hospital for treatment of injuries. Six passengers, ages ranging from 13- to 48-years-old, were treated for minor to moderate injuries.
One female victim, identified as a 24-year-old Thermal, California resident, was taken to St. Thomas More Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Police have cited “inattentive driving” as a possible factor that led to the bus accident. Investigators from federal, state and local authorities are looking into the cause of the bus accident.
