DeMotte, IN — An Indiana Department of Transportation truck backed over and killed an INDOT worker in an apparent construction accident Thursday morning, June 16, 2011. The fatal construction accident occurred just after 10 a.m., at the intersection of 1400 North and U.S. 231, reported nwitimes.com.

According to the Lake County coroner’s office, the deceased INDOT worker has been identified as 54-year-old Rensselaer resident Tony Northcutt.

Northcutt was reportedly working at the intersection when an INDOT truck backed over him, leaving Northcutt with fatal injuries.

Responding emergency crews rushed Northcutt to Franciscan St. Anthony Health Crown Point, where doctors pronounced him dead at 11:18 a.m.

Indiana State Police, INDOT and the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the fatal construction accident.

It is currently unknown why the driver of the truck did not see Northcutt before backing up.
