Kent, WA β A Kent man was killed Tuesday night, May 10, 2011, when he was involved in a collision with a BNSF train while riding his bike. The fatal bicycling accident occurred on Gowe Street in Kent at around 9:17 p.m., reported the Seattle Times.
The Kent Police Department reported that 47-year-old Lonnie Moss was riding his bike east on Gowe Street, when he went through lowered traffic-control arms at a railroad crossing, and rode his bike into the path of a BNSF passenger train. The train was headed north when the accident occurred.
The Gowe Street railroad crossing had large gates, red flashing signals and bells, which should have kept the bicyclist from crossing. Moss was reportedly wearing a helmet and radio headphones at the time of the accident, which police believe may have limited his ability to hear the approaching train.
βIt is extremely important that motorists, pedestrians and cyclists not take rail-crossing safety for granted and obey the signals,β said Kent police Lt. Pat Lowery in a statement.
Investigations into the accident are underway.
