Modesto, CA — A Modesto firefighter was injured when he fell eight feet onto his head inside of a burning home on Wednesday, April 6, 2011. Firefighters from Fire Station 1 were dispatched to a house fire at 3:53 a.m. at 206 Roselawn Avenue, reported KCRA.
The house fire was reported in the large basement of the home. The firefighters were checking the attic to make sure the blaze hadn’t spread, when firefighter Jim Black fell through the floor into the basement.
“I took a step and the floor just gave way. My one leg went through, my other leg stayed up and it twisted me upside down and I went down into the basement,” recounted Black to KCRA.
Black fell eight feet before landing on his head and shoulder. He then found a large opening on the side of the home and escaped.
Black was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor burns on his left calf. He was treated and released.
Investigators believe Black stepped onto a fire damaged set of stairs, when they collapsed, causing him to fall into the basement.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
