Houston, TX—A fire at a child care center in west Houston claimed the lives of three children and hospitalized four others. The deadly fire occurred Thursday, February 24, 2011 at a home located in the 2800 block of Crest Park Driver at Waypark Drive, reported My Fox Houston.
Responding emergency crews pronounced one child dead at the scene, while another was confirmed dead at around 4:40 p.m.
Four other children were rushed by ambulances to nearby hospitals for treatment. At least two of the surviving victims are being transported to Shriners Burn Hospital in Galveston.
The ages of the seven children ranged from 18 months to three years.
When firefighters arrived at the scene the smoke was reportedly so heavy, that they had to tear a hole in the roof of the house to use an infrared camera to locate the children.
The home is registered as a family home, not a day care center as previously reported, said Child Protective Services. A registered family home can care for 12 children including their own, while a day care center can take care of 200 to 300 children at a time.
The home is apparently owned and operated by Jackie’s Daycare.
A full investigation into the fire and how it was caused is underway.
