Williamsport, PA—An industrial accident in Old Lycoming Township claimed the life of a 21-year-old Williamsport man, whose clothing became entangled in a auger. The fatal workplace accident occurred around 8:30 a.m., at Eastern Wood Products, located at 2020 Mill Lane, as reported by the Sun Gazette.

According to police officials, Darryl E. Richards was assigned to the auger at the east side of the building, when his clothing somehow became entangled in the machinery.

Richards was reportedly grinding up scrap wood and feeding it to the incinerator when the accident occurred.

Township police Chief William C. said, “Something got stuck in the auger and when he tried to free it up, his clothing got caught in there.”

Co-workers stated that they last saw Richards about 10 minutes before the accident, when they went to get a drink of water in the main building.

Richards was apparently working alone at the time.

Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be investigating the fatal workplace accident.
