Ferrisburgh, VT—A suspected drunk driver caused a four-vehicle crash, which involved a school bus carrying the Mount Mansfield Union High School boys hockey team, on Sunday, January 16, 2011. The crash occurred around 11:15 p.m. on U.S. 7, near Dakin Farm store, as reported by the Burlington Free Press.
The Vermont State Patrol reported that John Billard, 66, was driving a 2000 Jeep Cherokee southbound on U.S. 7, when he lost control and veered into the northbound lane where it collided with the school bus, driven by Deborah C. Chrisman, 56, of Jericho. The impact of the collision caused the bus to go off the road and down a small embankment. Another vehicle then hit the Jeep, and a fourth vehicle collided with the third vehicle.
Responding rescue crews had to extricate Billard and his passenger, Mary Jane Danyow, 57, of Vergennes from the Jeep. They were then taken to a Burlington hospital for treatment. Danyow was listed in serious condition at Fletcher Allen Health Care’s intensive care unit with head and spine injuries.
Billard’s blood was drawn at Fletcher Allen Health Care as part of the processing for drunk driving.
The bus was transporting 16 players and two coaches at the time of the crash. “A couple of kids had headaches and neck were sore,” the coach told Burlington Free Press. The injured hockey players were taken by ambulance to Fletcher Allen Health Care, examined and later released.
The team was returning from a game against Burr and Burton in Manchester.
A full investigation is underway.
