Seminole, TX—An industrial accident critically injured an oil rig worker in west Gaines County when a metal object struck him in the head. The work-related accident occurred Wednesday morning, January 12, 2011, just after 10 a.m. at an oil rig located on CR 341 about five miles south of CR 314, as reported by LubbockOnline.com.
A driller working with the victim, Zach Fitzwilliam, 34, reported he was hit on the forehead by an elevator ear, when it broke and fell about 30 feet, knocking Fitzwilliam to the ground. Witnesses also told investigators that Fitzwilliam was looking up when he was hit, but he was wearing a hard hat.
Responding emergency medical crews airlifted Fitzwilliam via a Native Air helicopter from Hobbs, N.M., to University Medical Center for treatment, according to the Gaines County Sheriff’s Office. He is listed in critical condition.
Odessa-based Allen’s Casing Crews, LLC employs Fitzwilliam.
