El Paso, TX—A two-vehicle collision involving a school bus and a Honda Accord in far east El Paso, left two women dead. The fatal automobile accident occurred at the corner of Bob Hope and Vista Del Sol drive around 7:58 a.m., as reported by KFOXTV.com.
According to preliminary investigations, a silver Honda Accord, driven by Maria Gomez, 61, was traveling northbound on the 1500 block of Bob Hope Drive, when she ran a red traffic light at the intersection of Vista Del Sol. In doing so, the car slammed into an Socorro Independent School District (SISD) school bus that was driving eastbound on Vista Del Sol through the intersection. The collision caused the bus to turn over on its side.
The driver of the school bus was identified as 54-year-old Abel Hernandez. There were no students on the bus at the time of the crash.
Responding firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to rescue the occupants of the Honda.
Maria Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene, and her passenger 17-year-old Jennifer Gomez was rushed to Del Sol Medical Center, where she too was pronounced dead. Jennifer Gomez was a junior at Montwood High School.
Maria Gomez was wearing her seatbelt, but it is unknown if Jennifer Gomez was restrained as well.
Hernandez was treated for minor injuries by responding EMTs.
A full investigation is underway.
