Winona, MN—A demolition accident killed a Fountain City man when a wall collapsed on him Monday afternoon, January 3, 2011. The fatal accident occurred at around 4:00 p.m., at a property located at 25 McConnon Road, as reported by WKBT.

Winona Police reported that 52-year-old William Abts of Fountain City was working with others to help prepare the building for demolition. Abts was cutting steel, when a concrete wall suddenly collapsed on him.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene to dig Abts from underneath the rubble. Paramedics performed CPR on Abts while they were transporting him to a hospital for treatment, but not long after, Abts was pronounced dead.

Abts is reportedly part owner of the property being demolished and is the son-in-law of the building’s other owner, Rich Mikrut.

A full investigation is underway. It is unknown what caused the wall to collapse.
