Westbury, NY—A violent collision involving two vehicles, left a 17-year-old W.T. Clarke High School student dead and three others injured in the Tuesday afternoon, January 4, 2011 crash. The fatal automobile accident occurred at 5:38 p.m., at Bowling Green Drive and Salisbury Road in Westbury, as reported by Newsday.
Police officers reported that although the accident is still under investigation, they believe a 2006 BMW carrying three teenagers was driving south on Bowling Green Drive, when the driver may have failed to yield to a stop sign. The BMW then struck a Chevrolet Cobalt that was traveling westbound on Salisbury Road, police said.
On impact, the BMW rolled multiple times, hit a utility pole and finally came to a stop after it hit a tree. The Cobalt was thrown from the street and onto a front lawn.
Police said the crash was so violent that one of the vehicles tore off the bottom half off a utility pole and left its upper portion dangling by the electrical wires it is supposed to be supporting. The collision knocked out power on the street. Police said the car may have been speeding at the time of the crash.
One of the teenagers riding in the BMW was ejected in the collision and was found lying on a snow bank, while the other two teens remained trapped inside the BMW.
The driver of the BMW, Francesco Posillico, 17, of Westbury, was killed in the collision.
Responding emergency crews rushed the two teenagers to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow for treatment of their injuries. Poscillico was pronounced dead at the hospital. The second teen is being treated at the medical center’s pediatric intensive care unit. The teen is listed in a stable condition.
A third male teen was rushed to Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola in an unknown condition.
The three teens were students at W.T. Clarke High School in Westbury.
The fourth victim, the female driver of the Cobalt was also rushed the NUMC for treatment. Her condition was unavailable.
The intersection is reportedly considered dangerous to residents.
Investigations are underway.
