Springfield, MA—A Massachusetts state police trooper, who stopped to help a motorist, was seriously injured when his cruiser was hit from behind by another motorist on the Massachusetts Turnpike. The automobile accident occurred around 7:15 a.m., on Sunday, January 2, 2011, as reported by MassLive.com.
Massachusetts state police trooper Steven Larocco, 39, reportedly stopped on the eastbound side of the highway between the median and the left lane, near Exit 8, to assist the driver of a Jeep Liberty. Larocco was sitting inside his cruiser, when a Dodge Avenger driven by Robert Murangi, 40, of Federal Way, Washington, slammed into the rear of the police vehicle. The impact of the collision pushed the cruiser forward into the Jeep.
Responding emergency crews rushed two passengers inside the Dodge to Baystate Medical Center by ambulance for treatment of their injuries. Juliana Muthee, 21, was treated for serious injuries and Christopher Munyiri, 26 was taken for evaluation. Both of the injured victims are from Brockton.
Murangi was uninjured in the crash.
Larocco was also rushed to Baystate for treatment of serious injuries.
The driver of the Jeep, Martin Prendergast, 23, of Weymouth, suffered minor injuries. It was not reported if he was also transported to a hospital.
Officers cited Murangi for having an open container of alcohol inside the vehicle, and also for failing to take care in stopping.
Officials are unsure why the vehicle was stopped. A full investigation is underway.
