New York City, NY (Brooklyn Injury Lawyer News)—A bus driver suffered serious injuries when the mini-school bus he was operating crashed into several parked cars and a Brooklyn Bank while en route to a Coney Island-based middle school. The injurious accident, which occurred around 7:40 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, also sent nine uninjured students to the hospital to be evaluated by medical personnel. According to a New York Daily News report, witnesses said it appeared as if the bus driver, David Madden, 61, fainted prior to the wreck. Also, while a spokesperson alleged that “somebody rear-ended the bus” before it smashed into a Capital One bank at W. Sixth St. and Avenue U, authorities maintained that no other cars were responsible for the multi-vehicle crash.

Madden was operating a miniature yellow school bus with nine students on it when he seemingly passed out behind the wheel. According to 23-year-old Joseph Catalano, an eyewitness to the bus accident, the bus then “sideswiped (three) cars, went up the curb and into the bank.” “It sounded like a Dumpster© getting smashed to the ground,” Catalano added. Emergency responders were subsequently dispatched to the scene, where they found the bus driver seriously injured. Three significantly damaged vehicles could also be seen at the glass-covered crash scene. While the students aboard the bus were transported to Coney Island Hospital as a safety precaution, a spokesperson for the New York City Department of Education said the children did not appear to have suffered any wounds. Madden, on the other hand, was rushed to Lutheran Medical Center with serious accident-induced injuries. It was not clear if any citations were issued in connection with the Brooklyn school bus accident, though a full investigation was expected to be underway.
