Denver, CO – One man is dead after being struck by a RTD Light Rail train on Tuesday, December 7, 2010. Denver Police were alerted of the accident at the Alameda Avenue station at 2 p.m., as reported by 9News.

Denver Police reported a man somehow got onto the tracks, past the barbed wire, before being fatally struck by the train. Officials believe the man was trespassing in a restricted area, while trying to beat the train from the westside of the track, where the freight tracks are located.

The conductor of the train apparently saw the man and applied the emergency brake. Although there is sand on the tracks to get traction, the train wasn’t able to stop in time. Trains usually run at 50 mph in that area.

Police officials are unsure how the man got onto the tracks. They believe he may have climbed a fence, came in on a freight train, or came from somewhere else.

Homicide investigators were at the scene, as standard protocol.

Investigations are underway.
