Palmyra, WI—Rushing Waters Fisheries LLC, in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, recalled approximately 225 pounds of smoked trout and smoked salmon spreads due to potential health risks associated with the products. The FDA announced the recall on Nov. 30, 2010, after routine testing conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in some of the smoked fish spreads.

While no illnesses or adverse health effects have been reported in connection with the recalled smoked fish spreads, the recall was likely initiated as a safety precaution.

The majority of healthy consumers will be either unaffected by the listeria contamination or experience mild flulike symptoms.

Pregnant women, newborns, senior citizens and individuals with weakened immune systems, on the other hand, may potentially face complications resultant of the contamination.

According to a press release posted by the FDA, “The recalled products are smoked trout spread labeled lot number 00694 with a sell-by date of Dec 13, and smoked salmon spread labeled with lot 50012 with a sell-by date of Dec 11. Lot numbers and dates are on the bottom of the container. Affected smoked fish spreads were sold in eight-ounce containers and 4.5-pound round plastic tubs in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.”

Consumers have been urged to discard the potentially hazardous smoked trout and/or smoked salmon spreads, or return them to the place of purchase to receive a full reimbursement. No additional Rushing Waters Fisheries LLC products are subject to the recall.

Consumers with questions or concerns are advised to contact Rushing Waters at (800) 378-7088.
