Omaha, NE—A pilot managed to escape serious injury after a crash landing near Omaha’s Eppley Airfield. The aviation accident occurred around 4:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, shortly after the pilot reported engine difficulties to air traffic controllers, as reported by KETV.

According to information provided, Dr. Stephen Walters, 36, was piloting a single-engine Cessna aircraft when the plane began to experience engine problems. The plane subsequently went down, crashing on the edge of a pond.

The aircraft reportedly crash-landed on a portion of land, located the river side of a levee. The levee was built as a means of protecting the airport from the Missouri River.

Reports indicated the plane initially departed from Montana and was en route to Kentucky when the aviation accident occurred.

Pilot Walters was able to walk away from the wreckage, and was only taken to the hospital as a safety precaution. He was the only person aboard the plane when it went down.

Jerome Howard, a pilot who examined the crash site from above, contended the pilot was lucky, given that “it’s completely black. There’s no lights or anything, so he hit it in the right place.”

Howard also claimed that the accident would have been far worse had the small plane landed in the water. “It will sink, and the weather, being like it is this time of year, you’re going to be facing hypothermia real quick,” he said.

Nonetheless, Howard credited Walters with being a proficient pilot. “In this incident, I believe he was prepared for it and that’s why he walked away,” stated Howard.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was expected to conduct a full probe into the Nebraska plane crash.
