Warren County, NJ—A Hardwick Township school bus collision Wednesday, November 3, 2010 landed 11 people, including 10 Montclair High School students, in the hospital. The students were on a field trip when the accident occurred in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area just before 10 a.m., according to information provided by NJ.com.

Reports indicated a school bus was en route to a daylong team-building retreat at the Hardwick-based YMCA Camp Mason when the brakes on one of the school buses allegedly failed. Unable to brake while traveling down a steep hill, the school bus subsequently slammed into another bus.

The school buses involved in the wreck were part of a convoy, which included a total of four buses. According to Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area spokesperson Deb Nordeen, there were a total of 90 passengers aboard the two buses that collided.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel responded to the crash scene and took six victims to Sussex County-based Newton Memorial Hospital. Four others were rushed to Hackettstown Regional Medical Center, while reports did not specify where the 11th victim was transported.

The extent of the bus accident victims’ injuries was not immediately known. Kathleen Sandt, a spokesperson for the National Park Service, contended the driver of the bus that was hit suffered unspecified injuries in the collision.

A statement published on the Montclair Public Schools Web site indicated eight students were taken to area hospitals as a safety precaution. The students’ parents were notified of the school bus wreck.

Authorities are expected to investigate the New Jersey school bus accident, along with claims that brake failure was to blame for the collision.
