San Diego, CA– For the first time since 1991, a officer was fatally shot in the line of duty, while trying to apprehend a suspect. The brief but violent gun battle began late Wednesday, October 28, 2010 at 10:53 p.m., at the Canyon View Apartments on South Meadowbrook Drive at Paradise Valley Road, as reported by the San Diego Tribune.

The 17-year San Diego police veteran Christopher Wilson, 50, was shot in the head when authorities attempted to arrest the suspect, which then turned into a seven-hour SWAT stand-off.

Two U.S. Marshalls and five county probation officers with the gang unit came to the apartment to do a compliance check on the probationer who lives there. When the probationer opened the door, he immediately slammed it shut, prompting officers to kick the door in and take the probationer into custody.

San Diego police officers were called in for backup to help detain other people who barricaded themselves inside the apartment, including the fugitive who was in the master bedroom. Someone then began firing from behind closed bedroom door, hitting Wilson in the head. Three officers returned gunfire. A K-9 dog was also shot in the snout.

Wilson was rushed to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest, after three fellow officers carried him down a flight of stairs. Doctors managed to keep him alive along enough for his family to say goodbye early Thursday.

Police SWAT teams stormed the second-floor apartment at 6:45 a.m., after they fired flash-bang grenades and up to 20 tear-gas canisters. Officers also blew a hole through a wall of the apartment so they could get a camera inside to see what they were dealing with. They found two people dead, a man and a woman, with firearms near their bodies. It is unknown if the gunshots were self inflicted or they died during the gun battle.

Family identified the fugitive believed to have been involved in the shootout as Holim Lee, 30.

A full investigation is underway.
