Chesapeake, VA—Dollar Tree Stores Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), voluntarily recalled Wolverine, Spider-Man and Iron Man 2 Projector Flashlights due to fire and burn risks they pose to children using them. The CPSC announced the product safety recall, which affects approximately 275,000 units, on Tuesday, October 19, 2010.

Dollar Tree Stores Inc. apparently received word of three instances in which the children’s projector flashlights’ bulb and/or batteries overheated. Though no injuries were reported in connection with the recalled product, one incident report described a flashlight melting. The firm was also informed of one small fire, resultant of an overheated flashlight battery.

According to the CPSC news release, “The recalled projector flashlights are about 6 1/2 inches in length and have the Wolverine, Spider-Man and Iron Man characters and names printed on them. The flashlights come with five extra mini discs that attach to the flashlight to project various images. The back of the packaging contains the number 16879-20012-003-1003 and UPC 6 39277 16879 5.”

The super hero flashlights were imported by Greenbrier International, Inc. and sold at nationwide Dollar Tree, Dollar Bill$, Dollar Tree $1 Stop, Deal$ and Dollar Tree Deal$ stores. The potentially hazardous flashlights have been on store shelves since August 2010 and cost about $1.

Consumers have been urged to confiscate the recalled flashlights from children, remove and properly dispose of the batteries and return the product to the place of purchase for a full reimbursement.

For more information concerning the recall, consumers may contact Dollar Tree Stores Inc. at (800) 876-8077 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, or online at www.dollartree.com.
