Randolph, NJ—Primal Vantage Co., Inc. and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission expanded a previous recall to include about 40,000 additional Ameristep Plastic Strap-On Tree Steps due to fall hazards associated with them. The CPSC announced the defective product recall on Wednesday, October 27, 2010.

Primal Vantage recalled the Ameristep Plastic Strap-On Tree Steps upon discovering that the plastic part of the step can break, leaving consumers vulnerable to fall-related injuries. The New Jersey-based manufacturer has received six reports of step breakage, two of which resulted in contusions and/or lacerations.

According to the CPSC news release, “Product is a plastic tree step that attaches to a tree via a nylon strap and a large metal buckle. It is used to climb a tree in order to hunt from an elevated position. Model numbers 105 and 155 both have a “08”, which is stamped on the plastic portion of the step denoting the year of manufacture.”

The product was made available for purchase between April 2008 and November 2009 at numerous outdoor and sporting goods retailers nationwide. The product was sold as a 3-step package in model 105 or as a single step in model 155.

Consumers have been advised to immediately cease use of the potentially hazardous tree steps and contact Primal Vantage to find out how to receive a full reimbursement. Consumers will not be able to obtain a refund by returning the product to its place of purchase, however.

Primal Vantage can be reached toll-free at (866) 972-6168 Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Consumers may also visit www.treestandcustomerservice.com to print a return form or find more information concerning the recall.
