Baltimore, MD—The officer who crashed his police cruiser into a Baltimore City fire truck Wednesday, October 20, 2010, sadly succumbed to his serious injuries. According to updated reports by ABC2News.com and a previous report titled, “Baltimore MD Accident News: Police Cruiser, Fire Truck Collide; 2 Injured,” the police officer was identified as Tommy Portz.
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake alleged, “It is a tragic loss he was well loved not just by his devoted wife but by the officers who knew him and they are all taking this very hard and I would ask that you keep all of them in your prayers.”
Portz was a nine-year veteran patrol officer and is survived by a wife and three children.
The cause of the fatal collision has not yet been determined. Investigations are underway.
Data provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Encyclopedia revealed there were a total of 34,172 fatal traffic crashes during the year 2008.
A total of 37,423 victims were killed in those accidents on a national basis. In Maryland alone, 591 traffic fatalities were reported during that year.
