Carlsbad, CA– A deranged gunman fired several shots at an elementary school on Friday, October 8, 2010, hitting two students before he was taken down by bystanders, as reported by USA Today.

One witness, Terry Lynn told KNSD-TV, “he looked out his window to see a man park his van, jump over a fence at Kelly Elementary School, walk across a field, and fire a 357 Magnum revolver toward a crowd of children.”

“He was saying something about the president, he was ranting,” recalled Lynn.

The man was reportedly firing his gun randomly, while carrying a container that resembled a gas tank.

Two students were hit during the gunfire, but their injuries are considered to be not life-threatening. The North County Times stated the victims were shot in the arm.

The gunman was tackled by nearby construction workers who witnessed the shooting. They restrained the suspect until police officers arrived at the scene.

The school was put under lockdown while parents waited for their children at a nearby park.

A full investigation is underway.
