Tulsa, OK—Seven people were rushed to the hospital on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, after a dump truck rolled backward into a school bus. The crash occurred around 4:30 p.m., in the 900 block of North Gilcrease Museum Road, as reported by Tulsa World.

Tulsa Police officials reported that a dump truck was climbing a hill when its engine suddenly died, causing the truck to loose power to its air brakes. The dump truck then began rolling backwards, slamming into a school bus.

Tulsa Police Officer Brandon Smith stated, “By the time he got his engine restarted and reactivated his air brakes, he had already collided with the bus, which was behind the truck… It’s a pretty steep hill. The dump truck driver did what he could to stop.”

Officials say the school bus was at a complete stop when the truck slammed into it. The bus did not appear to be following the truck too closely. The bus was carrying 18 people from Central High School at the time.

Responding emergency crews assessed 22 patients, including the two drivers. Two students were rushed to Hillcrest Medical Center, while two other students were taken to OSU Medical Center. The bus driver was transported to St. John Medical Center for treatment. All of the victims were reportedly in fair condition.

Family members also took three other students to nearby emergency rooms for a medical evaluation. Other students were treated at the scene for minor head, neck, shim or knee injuries.

A full investigation is underway.
