Halifax, MA—A helicopter crashed in a wooded area near Route 36 Sunday, September 19, 2010, leaving a pilot seriously injured. The accident occurred in Halifax, Mass., in close proximity to Twin Lakes Drive, as reported by the Boston Globe.
According to Halifax Fire Chief Bill Carrico, the aircraft was thought to be an “experimental helicopter.” Around 1 p.m., the helicopter went down for unknown reasons. The helicopter crashed in a wooded area and ostensibly caught fire.
Carrico alleged 30 percent of the pilot’s body suffered burns in the aviation accident. The pilot, who was the only person aboard the aircraft at the time, also suffered fractures in the helicopter wreck.
Rescue personnel spent approximately one hour making their way to the crash scene. The injured pilot was eventually rushed to Plymouth-based Jordan Hospital for treatment. The man was identified as 67-year-old Bruce M. Shulman of East Boston.
Massachusetts State Police (MSP) reported the helicopter crash occurred near the MBTA commuter rail station.
While investigators seem to believe an engine malfunction might have contributed to the Halifax helicopter crash, a full probe will be required to confirm such suspicions.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is expected to investigate the injurious Massachusetts helicopter accident.
