San Jose CA DUI Crash: Teen killed in Fiery SUV Accident; Driver Arrested

San Jose, CA—A fatal alcohol-related collision early Tuesday, September 21, 2010, killed a 18-year-old when the vehicle slammed into a light pole and erupted in flames. The fatal SUV crash occurred at the intersection of Almaden Expressway and O’Grady Drive in South San Jose, as reported by the San Jose Mercury News.

According to police officials, a 2001 Ford Explorer slammed into a light pole and possibly a tree before the vehicle caught fire.

When police officials arrived at the scene they found the passenger, an 18-year-old male, trapped inside the burning vehicle. The unidentified victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, Mitchell Braden Pennings, 18, reportedly tried to flee the scene, but was apprehended by officials. Pennings was arrested and booked on charges of felony DUI, felony hit-and-run, and vehicular manslaughter.

Pennings was also transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Police asked anyone with information about the fatal collision to contact the San Jose Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit at 408-277-4654.
