Phoenix, AZ— A downpour of rain on Saturday, August 28, 2010, has been blamed for multiple collisions on Interstate 10, which involved as many as 69 vehicles, reports USA Today.
Police officials reported that the accidents occurred during the evening hours as rainstorms swept in at around 6 p.m., in downtown Phoenix.
As many as 40 people were evaluated at the scene, while seven others were taken to nearby hospitals. Two of the hospitalized victims were reportedly in serious condition.
Phoenix fire officials said one collision alone involved about 35 vehicles, which spanned over 2 ½ miles, resulting in dozens of emergency calls to 911.
Officials are attributing the crashes to weather-related conditions.
A full investigation into the accidents is underway. Authorities believe that no one was killed because people slowed down due to the downpour of rain.
