New York, NY—Ford Motor Company has settled their ninth largest U.S. verdict, a total of $131 million, for a rollover accident that killed a New York Mets minor league baseball player, as reported by Bloomberg.
The $131 million lawsuit was settled on confidential terms, which will be paid to the late baseball player’s estate.
The minor league ball player, Brian Cole, was reportedly ejected from a Ford Explorer in March 2001. Cole was in Florida, on his way home from spring training with the Mets. The Explorer reportedly drifted off the road, causing it to loose control and overturn.
Cole’s attorneys stated, “His seat belt was still buckled after the accident was over but he was thrown from the car… Physical evidence showed that Cole had been wearing the belt.”
The Jasper County, Mississippi, jury handed down the verdict on September 2, 2010. The verdict also awarded Cole’s cousin, who was injured in the wreck, $1.5 million.
The lawsuit, Cole v. Ford Motor Co., 12-0076, Circuit Court, Jasper County Mississippi, is also the eight-largest jury award in 2010.
