Tampa, FL (Tampa Bay Accident Attorney News)—A single-vehicle rollover on Interstate 75 killed a pregnant woman and her unborn child, along with a teenage boy when the tread of their SUV’s tire separated. The fatal collision, which also injured six other children, occurred on Saturday, August 31, 2010 around 7:35 a.m., along Interstate 75, near the Ellenton/U.S. 301 exit, as reported by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

A 2003 Ford Explorer, carrying nine people from Tampa was traveling on southbound Intestate 75, when the tread from the left rear tire suddenly began to separate, causing the SUV to lose control, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). The SUV then spun-out and rolled into the median of the highway, where it finally came to a stop among some brush.

Three people were ejected from the SUV as it rolled down the highway. Six children who were riding in the vehicle were not wearing their seat belts at the time.

Shakia Peterson, 35, a passenger in the SUV, was reportedly 36 weeks pregnant at the time of the wreck. Tragically, she and her unborn child were pronounced dead at the scene.

Passenger Roderick James, 14, was rushed to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg where his injuries also proved fatal. Another victim, Lakia Dawkins, 12, was also taken to Bayfront in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Responding emergency crews also rushed the driver, Freddie James, 45, and passengers Caprice Dawkins, 10; Jerome Dawkins, 17; Fredquanda James, 10; and Jamkia Dawkins, 15, to Manatee Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Martavius Dawkins, 16, was treated for minor injuries.

No other vehicles were a part of the deadly crash. The FHP is investigating the wreck.
