New Bern, NC—A backhoe operator was killed on Thursday, August 19, 2010 when he was ejected from a heavy piece of machinery and crushed underneath. The fatal construction accident occurred around 11:33 a.m., at a Budget Suites Inn on North Nunn Street in Havelock, as reported by Sun Journal.
According to officials, Donald Ondra Collins, 39, of North Harlowe, was reportedly operating a backhoe, while clearing dirt and putting down sod around the hotel with two other people, when the accident occurred. Apparently, the rear wheel of the heavy machinery slid down a slight grade that led into a drainage ditch, ejecting Collins along the way. The loader overturned and landed on top of Collins, trapping him underneath.
Collins’ coworkers were reportedly on the other side of the building and immediately realize that the backhoe overturned.
It was not reported if Collins died at the scene or was transported to a hospital before succumbing to his fatal injuries.
Officials with the North Carolina Department of Labor and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will be investigating the construction accident.
