San Diego, CA—A suspected drunk driver, who has a history of drug and alcohol abuse, ran down three teenagers who were walking on a sidewalk in La Jolla. The crash, which hospitalized the teens, occurred on La Jolla Boulevard near Midway Street at around 6:30 p.m., as reported by Sign On San Diego and KGTV San Diego.
San Diego authorities reported that three teenagers, identified as Alani Aguerre, 14, Miles Polger and Ian Brininstool, whose ages are unknown, were walking on La Jolla Boulevard when Ronald Troyer, 67, plowed into the teens with his Chrysler New Yorker. The car stuck the teenagers, and narrowly missed two others.
One of the teens, Alani Aguerre, was carried for about 20 yards on top of the car’s hood, before being thrown through a glass window of the Cass Street Café and Bakery, and pinned underneath the car.
The car also hit two patrons inside the café, who sustained non-life threatening injuries.
Aguerre suffered a broken left leg, a broken left arm, and a broken pelvis among other injuries. All three teens were rushed to area hospitals for treatment. It was not reported if the café patrons and Troyer were taken to a hospital as well.
Troyer was subsequently arrested for suspicion of drunk driving. Troyer reportedly was convicted in 2004 and 2005 for previous DUI arrests. Police officers also said his license had been suspended 7 times.
A full investigation is underway.
