Fairbank, IA– A one-vehicle collision, which caused a vehicle to slam into ethanol plant pipes on Iowa Highway 281, left one person dead and injured another on Friday, August 6, 2010. The fatal wreck occurred on westbound Iowa 281, just east of Fairbanks around 5:30 a.m., as reported by the Des Moines Register.

The Iowa State Patrol reported that a 1998 Pontiac Firebird was traveling westbound on Iowa 281, when the driver apparently lost control, causing the vehicle to roll. The out-of-control car then cleared an 8-foot-tall chain-link fence, landing on the gas pipes.

Passenger Brad William Higgins, 49, of Fairbanks, was tragically killed in the rollover accident. He apparently was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the motor vehicle accident.

The driver of the Pontiac, Corey Allen Annis, 23, of Fairbanks was injured in the wreck. It was not reported if emergency crews transported him to the hospital for treatment. Police officer say Annis’ seat belt saved his life.

The gas pipes, which belong to Hawkeye Renewables ethanol plant, were damaged.

Officials are not sure what caused Annis to loose control, but they believe speed was a factor. A full investigation is underway.
