American Canyon, (San Francisco Auto Accident Lawyer Tweet News ) Officials from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) are investigating a horrific multi-vehicle crash that look the lives of four family members Thursday, June 3, 2010. The tragic wreck occurred along California State Route 12 in Napa County, California before 8:20 a.m. An 18-wheeler, flatbed truck, pickup truck, and passenger car were all reportedly involved in the fatal motor vehicle collision (MVC). Authorities apparently closed off both east and westbound lanes of Highway 12, between Kelly Road and Interstate 80 (I-80), for about five hours after the accident, according to information provided by the Mercury News.
Reports indicated a green Subaru, driven by 48-year-old Matthew Jay Smith, was traveling westbound on the highway when a big rig bumped into it for unknown reasons. Upon doing so, the passenger car veered into the path of an eastbound flatbed truck. The flatbed truck, which was lugging concrete pipes at the time, slammed into the Subaru broadside. The flatbed rig veered out of control, eventually coming to a rest on the north shoulder. The semi-truck from the initial crash, on the other hand, continued westward where it crashed into a pickup truck.
According to Napa County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Tracey Stuart, all occupants of the Subaru succumbed to their traumatic injuries at the scene. The causalities spanned three generations, with a father, daughter, and two grandparents killed in the unfortunate highway accident. The department identified those fatally injured in the rig-involved wreck as Mathew Jay Smith, 48, of Ashland, Oregon; Laura Katharine Smith, 19, of Downingtown, Pennsylvania; and Richard G. Smith, 80, and Sally Smith, 74, both of Simsbury, Connecticut. Though the driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to a local hospital to be treated for “minor to moderate injuries,” no one else was injured in the crash. California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Jaret Paulson noted that the big rig had been traveling at an excessively high rate of speed when it struck the family’s car. The California Highway Patrol is expected to conduct a full probe into the fatal collision.
