Boynton Beach, FL—A passenger van carrying four people with “special needs” became involved in an unfortunate collision with a car around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2010. The violent wreck occurred along the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Boynton Beach. As a result of the motor vehicle collision (MVC), one person was killed while five others were hospitalized for their injuries, according to information provided by WPTV.com.
Reports indicated a passenger van was taking four special-needs individuals home after a day of vocational training at the Boca Habilitation Center on Boca Rio Road when the fatal accident occurred. As the van approached the Boynton Beach Blvd. exit on I-95, a Toyota Scion tried to merge into the HOV lane.
The 18-year-old Scion driver, Shane Davila, then realized there was another vehicle traveling in that lane already. Davila overcorrected, consequently T-boning the passenger van. The impact sent the van, owned by Gayle’s Transportation Inc., careening into a pole. The pole reportedly held the sign for the Boynton Beach Blvd. exit.
Palm Beach Fire Rescue personnel allegedly had to extricate the driver of the van, Gary Anthony Francis, and another passenger due to extensive damage to the front end of the vehicle. One passenger in the van, 55-year-old Rachelle Thaddies, was sadly killed in the wreck.
Francis, along with Anthony Laster, Gracita Clairvoyant and Regindia Palmore, were rushed to Daytona Medical Center. Davila was apparently taken to JFK Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries.
Executive Director of the Habilitation Center, Bill Ferris, stated, “It was just heartbreaking there aren’t words to describe that feeling.”
Francis, Laster and Clairvoyant were all listed in serious condition at last check. Palmore, on the other hand, remained in critical condition.
While no charges have been filed as of yet, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is expected to continue their probe into the deadly car-van collision.
