Milwaukee, WI– An 8-year-old boy who is diagnosed with multiple mental disabilities was reportedly transported in a van with adult prisoners. The boy was being transported from the Wheaton Franciscan Treatment Center in Racine to a hospital in Winnebago, as reported by WISN.
Sara Hellesen, the mother of the 8-year-old boy, Izayah, is outraged by the incident. Hellesen stated, “”At first I was kind of shocked. I’m thinking that my son was being transported by himself, but he wasn’t.” It’s hard enough, you know, with what he’s been through, and what he’s gone through so far. And my son shouldn’t have to see people in shackles and he shouldn’t have to see chains wrapped around people and women in straight jackets. It’s just something that needs to be worked on. There’s a glitch in the system that has to be fixed.”
A Green Bay-based company, Lock & Load, is contacted by Racine County to transport mental health patients and prisoners. Lock & Load operations director Doug Thomas said Izayah was in a separate area from the adults and was unable to see them from where he was seated.
Lock & Load has affirmed that this will not happened again.
Izayah’s mother is happy the county is doing something to make sure this wouldn’t happen again, and that her son wasn’t seriously harmed during the transport.
