Lake Como, FL—A mother and her two young children were tragically killed when the vehicle they were in drove into the path of an Amtrak train. The train-vehicle collision occurred in Putnam County on Monday, June 14, 2010, according to information provided by WESH.com.
Reports indicated 34-year-old Melissa Johnson had driven to her daughter’s home to pick up her sons, ages 6 and 9, just prior to the deadly crash. Johnson allegedly pulled out from a private driveway and subsequently accelerated towards a dangerous railway crossing.
Just as the family’s vehicle touched the railroad tracks, an Amtrak train smashed into it. The impact killed all three of the vehicles occupants instantly, according to investigating officials. Authorities have not released the names of the children fatally injured in the train-vehicle wreck.
That particular railroad crossing has no crossing arms or flashing lights. “It’d be wonderful if they do put crossing guards up at places like this. Flashing lights would give people more warning,” said Elizabeth Miller, a family friend.
The Amtrak train was en route from Miami to New York and was allegedly traveling at a rate of approximately 70 mph at the time. While there were 200 passengers aboard the locomotive at the time, none of them sustained injuries in the crash.
Investigations are expected to be underway.
