Los Angeles, CA—Three construction workers are recovering at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center after the hydraulic scissor-lift they were working on fell over. Rescue teams were called to the Glendale Galleria around 8:30 a.m. on Monday, June 14, 2010, as reported by the Daily News.
The three Metro Construction workers were reportedly standing in a bucket cab at the top of the scissor-lift, while removing material from planter boxes perched on the ledge of a second-floor window. The lift then suddenly fell over, crashing to the ground some 20 feet below.
A spokesperson with the state’s Department of Industrial Relations stated, “ While the employees were shoveling the material out of one of the planters, it shifted and struck the scissor lift, causing it to tip over. One of the employees apparently jumped off the lift and the other two employees rode the lift down. All three were seriously injured.”
Responding emergency crews rushed the injured workers to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center where they received treatment of head, limb, back and chest injuries.
Officials with the Division of Occupational Safety Health are conducting and investigation into the construction accident. They will be looking into whether the lift was being used properly and if the weight limit was exceeded at the time.
