West Palm Beach FL Criminal Law: Man, 80 crashes SUV into home after shootout

West Palm Beach, FL—An elderly man suffered critical injuries after defending himself in a shootout and then going on to crash his sport utility vehicle into a home. The injurious episode occurred at approximately 3 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2010, according to information provided by the Palm Beach Post.

Reports indicated 80-year-old Lamar Davis was fire upon in the 1200 block of 10th Street. In an attempt to protect himself, Davis subsequently began to fire back at the unidentified culprits.

Upon exchanging gunfire, however, Davis lost control of his SUV. He careened through the spot where 10th Street dead ends at Australian Avenue and smashed into a nearby residence. There were children sleeping in the room that Davis’ vehicle slammed into.

While five people were reportedly occupying the home at the time, all managed to escape injury in the accident. Their home, on the other hand, sustained substantial damage.

The tenants, who are receiving aid from are Red Cross volunteers, will not be allowed to return to their home until an inspector verifies that the structure is indeed secure.

Davis was rushed to St. Mary’s Medical Center with critical injuries after the shooting and SUV wreck occurred. According to Palm Beach police detective Joe Filipkowski, “He’s got a right to protect himself if he’s being attacked – like any citizen.”
