Orangeburg, SC—A pedestrian suffered fatal injuries after a tour bus struck her in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. The deadly collision occurred early Sunday, May 30, 2010, as reported by WLTX.com.
South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) officials stated a woman was illegally strolling along U.S. Route 301 when the fatal accident happened around 2:10 a.m.
A tour bus struck the 36-year-old woman on a portion of U.S. 301, approximately two miles east of Orangeburg.
The victim was identified as Felice Sistrunk of Orangeburg. She succumbed to her traumatic injuries at the scene.
Authorities identified the driver of the tour bus as a male from Kingstree, South Carolina. Lake City-based Happy Tours LLC was the apparent owner of the 1998 Vanhool Bus involved in the crash.
It was not disclosed if the bus driver or any others sustained injuries in the bus-related traffic accident.
Police also noted Sistrunk was dressed in dark, non-reflective attire at the time of impact.
A full probe will be necessary to determine the true cause of the accident.
Statistics provided by the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) indicated there were 100 pedestrian fatalities during the year 2008.
South Carolina was also ranked as the state with the fourth highest pedestrian fatality rate (2.23 per 100,000 population), behind Florida, Delaware and Louisiana, sequentially.
