DeBary, FL—A violent boat explosion left a mother and her young son hurt just before 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, 2010. The blast occurred at the Highbanks Marina and Camp Resort in Volusia County, Florida, according to information provided by ClickOrlando.com.
Reports indicate an unidentified woman and her 5-year-old son were aboard a docked boat when it abruptly burst into flames. The Sea Ray watercraft explosion allegedly sent the child hurling from one end of the boat to another.
Marianne and Rick Hacker witnessed the horrific incident and notified officials. According to Rick Hacker, “I started dialing 911 while she was running over to the boat, and she went over to check to see if there was anybody to the boat.”
The 5-year-old, whose identity was also withheld, suffered burns on his face. Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel were subsequently dispatched to the scene to rush the child to Arnold Palmer Medical Center. Though his mother rode with him in the ambulance, she refused medical treatment for her minor burns.
The child’s father was reportedly parking his vehicle when the blast occurred, which left the boat engulfed in flames.
The fire marshal is expected to conduct a full investigation into the boat explosion.
