Arlington, TX—A teen who was riding in a stolen SUV died from the injuries he acquired during a collision with a jackknifed semi-truck on Monday, May 10, 2010. Officials said the wreck occurred about 6 a.m., on Interstate 30 near the Lamar Boulevard/Cooper Street exit, as reported by the Star-Telegram.
Police officers reported that the semi-truck driver, who was hauling produce for Aldi stores, lost control of his big rig and subsequently slammed into the concrete highway median. The trailer of the semi then fell over on a SUV, driven by an unidentified 16-year-old. Police officials say the SUV was reported stole from an Arlington area home that morning.
Police spokeswoman, Tiara Richard stated, “The driver of the stolen SUV managed to get out of the vehicle and attempted to leave the scene. That juvenile was arrested and charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and failure to stop and render aid.”
Two other teens were trapped in the SUV, which took responding emergency crews about 45 minutes to free. Marcos Ruiz, 17, a passenger of the SUV was airlifted by CareFlite helicopter to JPS, where doctors pronounced him dead at 3:49 p.m. Another passenger, Renee Escalante, 17, was taken to Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital in stable condition. The 16-year-old SUV driver was reportedly treated for minor injuries.
The driver of the semi, Edwin Manning, was also taken to Arlington Memorial, where he is in stable condition.
Officials say its unclear what caused the accident.
