Florida Highway Patrol troopers to probe Walt Disney World bus-involved traffic collision that killed 10-year-old bicyclist.

Lake Buena Vista, FL—A 10-year-old bicyclist was tragically killed after being struck by a Walt Disney World transport bus at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort on Thursday afternoon, April 1, 2010. The fatal traffic collision occurred in Orange County, Florida at approximately 1:45 p.m., according to information provided by the Orlando Sentinel.

Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers reported two unidentified children, ages 10 and 11, riding their bikes south on Big Pine Drive, a road inside the Fort Wilderness Resort, when a southbound bus hit the young boy for unknown reasons. FHP Sgt. Kim Montes noted, “We are still trying to determine exactly where the point of impact was.” While 28 passengers aboard the Disney bus managed to escape injury in the traffic collision, the child was not so fortunate. The 10-year-old male Florida resident sadly died at the scene.

The fatal accident was reported to be the second transportation-related fatality to occur at Walt Disney World in the last year. During the summer, a 21-year-old monorail pilot was killed during a locomotive collision. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited Disney for workplace safety violations with regard to that accident, which amounted to $35,200 in fines. A wrongful death lawsuit was also filed in connection with the fatal incident, according to previous Justice News Flash coverage.

The traffic collision was also noted for being the second child-involved accident at Fort Wilderness and the third bus-involved collision to occur at Walt Disney World within a span of approximately six months. Disney spokesperson Andrea Finger apparently stated, “We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the boy’s family and loved ones for their loss… We’re currently providing the necessary resources and care to help the family with this situation.” A traffic homicide investigation is reportedly underway by Florida Highway Patrol troopers.
