High Point, NC—A pregnant woman and her unborn child suffered fatal injuries after the scooter they were riding on became involved in a violent collision Saturday, March 27, 2010. The driver of the scooter faces DUI charges with regard to the incident, according to information provided by WXII12.com.
Officials from the High Point Police Department reported 57-year-old Jerry Lee Phillips driving a scooter on Triangle Lake Road when the bike allegedly veered off the roadway. Upon doing so, the scooter struck a culvert, consequently ejecting Phillips and his passenger, identified as 30-year-old Crystal Marie Grimes.
Emergency medical services (EMS) crews seemingly responded to the scene at approximately 4:19 p.m., after receiving multiple reports of a severe accident at the 3000 block of Triangle Lake Road. Phillips and Grimes were both taken to High Point Regional Hospital to be treated for the serious injuries they sustained in the traffic crash. Grimes, who was 25 weeks pregnant, was pronounced dead at the medical center. The baby, who was delivered upon Grimes’ arrival at the hospital, also sustained injuries, which eventually proved fatal.
Phillips was charged with driving under the influence and may face additional charges in the coming days. High Point traffic investigators are allegedly conducting a full investigation into the deadly scooter wreck.
