The successful passage of a California proposition that defines marriage as between one man and one woman has sparked protests in Los Angeles

Fort Worth, TX (JusticeNewsFlash.com) The successful passage of a California proposition that defines marriage as between one man and one woman has sparked protests in Los Angeles.

According to a November 7, 2008 article by Shaya Tayfee Mohajer that appeared at APNews.myway.com, thousands of gay and lesbian activists protested outside a Mormon temple in Los Angeles because, according to the story. The church, along with Catholic and evangelical denominations, was part of a group that pushed for the passage of the state constitutional amendment.

The issue of the definition of marriage has been a contentious one for years. According to the APNews article, three lawsuits challenging Proposition 8 were filed the day after the election. The suits allege that the proposition was an unlawful attempt to radically alter the constitution instead of an amendment to the constitution, the APNews article noted.

Same-sex unions were soundly defeated by voters in Arizona and Florida, according to a November 8, 2008 article by Jennifer Mooney Piedra that appeared in the Miami Herald. According to the article, the Florida Marriage Protection Act passed with 62% of Florida voters in favor of defining marriage as one man and one woman.

Arizona passed a similar ballot initiative called Proposition 102, which defined marriage as a union of one man and one woman. According to a November 9, 2008 Washington Post article that appeared on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazetteā€™s website, 70% of black voters chose to preserve traditional marriage and voted for the democrat party. The exit polls show that while black and Hispanic voters vote for democrat candidates, these same voters are still socially conservative.
